Yoga Therapy in Ontario

RECONNECT WITH YOURSELF THROUGH YOGA THERAPY AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

Sometimes words alone are not enough.

Stress, trauma, anxiety, grief, and life's challenges can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves. While we may understand what has happened intellectually, our bodies often continue to carry the effects long after the experience has passed.

As a Certified International Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) and Registered Psychotherapist, I integrate trauma-informed Yoga Therapy into psychotherapy when it feels supportive for your unique healing journey. Rather than focusing on exercise or achieving particular postures, Yoga Therapy offers another way of understanding yourself through awareness, breath, connection, and the wisdom of an ancient philosophy that has guided people for thousands of years.

At MYTyoga, Yoga Therapy is woven thoughtfully into psychotherapy. Sessions may include mindful breathing, grounding practices, body awareness, yoga philosophy, or gentle therapeutic movement alongside compassionate conversation. Every approach is individualized, trauma-informed, and adapted to your comfort, needs, and goals.

Whether you are navigating anxiety, trauma, emotional overwhelm, depression, addiction recovery, grief, or simply longing to feel more connected to yourself, Yoga Therapy can become another pathway toward healing, supporting both your mind and your body as they work together.

Healing Through Connection, Respect, and Relationship

Healing begins when you feel safe enough to be fully yourself.

Yoga Therapy is not about asking your body to do more. It is about listening to what your body may already be communicating with kindness and curiosity. Integrated into psychotherapy, Yoga Therapy offers another way to understand your experiences by gently bringing awareness to the connections among your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and nervous system.

Our work together is always collaborative. There is no expectation to move in ways that don't feel comfortable, and many sessions involve no physical movement at all. Instead, Yoga Therapy may include mindful breathing, grounding practices, guided awareness, meditation, or gentle therapeutic movement when these support your healing and feel right for you.

Every session is tailored to your unique needs, honouring your pace, your experiences, and your goals. Whether we are sitting in conversation, practising a simple breathing exercise, or noticing what is happening within your body, the intention remains the same: to create a safe space where healing can unfold naturally.

Yoga isn't about touching your toes. It's about reconnecting to your soul.

— Michelle Peddle, RP, DCP

How Yoga Therapy Can Help

Yoga Therapy is integrated into psychotherapy to support healing in ways that honour both your mind and your body. Depending on your needs, it may help you:

  • Develop a kinder relationship with yourself.
  • Increase awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations.
  • Reconnect with your body after trauma or difficult life experiences.
  • Learn to move through life with greater awareness and intention.
  • Strengthen self-compassion and trust in yourself.
  • Reconnect with your values, your body, and yourself.

Together, we'll explore what feels supportive for you, always at your own pace and in a way that respects your comfort and personal goals.

How I Integrate Yoga Therapy into Psychotherapy

Yoga Therapy is never a separate service added onto psychotherapy. Instead, it is thoughtfully woven into our work together when it feels supportive for your healing journey.

Depending on your needs, we may integrate:

  • Breathwork and grounding practices.
  • The ethical teachings of yoga, including the yamas and niyamas.
  • Mindfulness and present-moment awareness.
  • Gentle body awareness when appropriate.
  • Therapeutic movement, when it supports your goals.

There is never an expectation to move, stretch, or practise yoga postures. Every session is guided by your comfort, your goals, and what feels most supportive in the moment. Many sessions remain entirely conversation-based, while others may include gentle Yoga Therapy practices as part of the therapeutic process.

Yoga Therapy & Healing

Healing often involves learning how to feel safer and more connected within yourself.

Yoga Therapy invites you to notice the relationship between your thoughts, emotions, body, breath, and the way you move through life. Through gentle awareness, you may begin to recognize patterns of tension, disconnection, or overwhelm with greater compassion.

This work is not about forcing change. It is about creating space for healing to unfold at a pace that feels supportive, respectful, and sustainable.

Yoga means "to unite." Rather than focusing solely on physical postures, Yoga Therapy invites us to reconnect with the relationship among our body, mind, and soul. It is a philosophy that teaches us how to live with greater awareness, compassion, and intention, both within ourselves and in relationship with others.

Who I Work With

Yoga Therapy may be helpful if you are longing to reconnect with yourself in a meaningful way.

I often work with individuals who are experiencing:

  • Trauma and the lasting effects it can have on the mind and body.
  • Anxiety, chronic stress, or feeling overwhelmed by life's demands.
  • Emotional overwhelm or feeling disconnected from themselves.
  • Depression, grief, or significant life transitions.
  • Addiction recovery and the desire to create healthier ways of living.
  • A search for greater meaning, purpose, or connection in life.

You don't need any previous experience with yoga to benefit from Yoga Therapy. Whether we explore mindful breathing, grounding practices, yoga philosophy, or simply notice what is happening within the present moment, every session is adapted to your unique needs and guided by your comfort.

Together, we create space to reconnect with your body, quiet the mind, and move through life with greater awareness, compassion, and intention.

What Healing Can Look Like

Healing looks different for everyone. There is no right way, no finish line, and no expectation that your journey will look like anyone else's.

Over time, you may begin to notice:

  • Feeling calmer and more grounded.
  • Responding rather than reacting.
  • Developing a kinder relationship with yourself.
  • Feeling more connected to your body and your breath.
  • Greater clarity, resilience, and self-awareness.
  • Moving through life with more intention and less overwhelm.

Healing isn't about never struggling again. It's about meeting yourself with greater awareness, compassion, and trust, even when life feels difficult.

Why I Integrate This Approach Into My Practice

Yoga has been part of my life since 2009, shaping not only how I practise psychotherapy, but how I choose to live each day.

Over the years, I continued my studies through the Yoga Institute in Mumbai and later became a Certified International Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT). My doctoral research then explored how Yoga

Therapy and psychotherapy can be thoughtfully integrated to support healing.

Today, Yoga Therapy is woven naturally into my work. Whether we're exploring the ethical teachings of yoga, practising mindful breathing, or simply noticing what is present in the moment, my intention is always the same: to support healing in a way that honours your whole self.

Michelle's Reflections

One of the greatest gifts yoga has given me is a different way of seeing life.

It has taught me that healing isn't about becoming someone new. It's about remembering who you are beneath expectations, busyness, and experiences that may have pulled you away from yourself.

While many people know yoga through physical postures, I've come to know it as a philosophy for living. The teachings continue to influence how I care for myself, how I show up in relationships, and how I support clients in psychotherapy.

My hope is that our work together offers more than symptom relief. I hope it creates space for you to reconnect with yourself, move through life with greater awareness and compassion, and discover what healing looks like for you.

Healing isn't found in perfect postures. It's found in the way we meet ourselves.

Psychotherapy Questions & Answers

What is Yoga Therapy in psychotherapy?

Yoga Therapy is a holistic approach that supports healing by integrating the wisdom of yoga into everyday life. Rather than focusing only on physical postures, it may include breathwork, mindfulness, grounding practices, body awareness, and the philosophical teachings of yoga. Within my practice, Yoga Therapy is thoughtfully integrated into psychotherapy when it supports your goals and healing journey.

How is Yoga Therapy different from a yoga class?

A yoga class is often centred on movement and physical postures. Yoga Therapy is individualized and adapted to your unique needs. In psychotherapy, it may involve mindful breathing, grounding, yoga philosophy, or body awareness, and many sessions include no physical movement at all.

Do I need yoga experience to benefit from Yoga Therapy?

Not at all. You don't need to be flexible, physically fit, or have practised yoga before. Yoga Therapy meets you where you are and is adapted to your comfort, abilities, and goals.

What concerns can Yoga Therapy help with?

Yoga Therapy may support individuals experiencing trauma, anxiety, chronic stress, emotional overwhelm, grief, depression, addiction recovery, or feeling disconnected from themselves. Together, we'll explore whether integrating Yoga Therapy into psychotherapy feels supportive for your unique needs.

How do you integrate Yoga Therapy into psychotherapy?

I weave Yoga Therapy into psychotherapy with your permission and only when it feels appropriate for your healing journey. This may include breathwork, grounding, mindfulness, body awareness, or the ethical and philosophical teachings of yoga. Every session is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to you.

Other Approaches I Integrate

Every person's healing journey is unique. Alongside Yoga Therapy, I may also integrate other therapeutic approaches depending on your needs, goals, and what feels most supportive.

  • Compassionate Inquiry® – to gently explore the deeper patterns beneath thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
  • Somatic Therapy – to strengthen awareness of the connection between your body, nervous system, and emotions.
  • Person-Centred Therapy – to provide a compassionate, collaborative space where you feel heard, understood, and accepted.
  • Mindfulness – to cultivate present-moment awareness, self-compassion, and emotional regulation.
  • Indigenous-Informed Practice – when connection to the land, relationship, ceremony, or holistic ways of knowing may support your healing.

Together, we'll discover the approach—or combination of approaches—that best supports your unique journey.

You Don't Need to Have It All Figured Out to Begin

Healing doesn't begin when you have everything figured out. It begins when you're willing to take one small step toward yourself.

Whether you're curious about Yoga Therapy, exploring psychotherapy for the first time, or simply longing to feel more connected to yourself, we'll begin exactly where you are.

Healing isn't about having all the answers. It's about being willing to begin. It's about taking one meaningful step toward yourself.
